Coffee Spills

What I hear and see and think about at the coffee shops I patronize.
Brisk. Fresh. Well-balanced. Occasional nutty and bittersweet overtones.

Thank you for your service

Fox News was on, showing a military band this morning, Memorial Day, in the coffee shop. A slightly built man in his 60s sat down at the table next to me. With the music providing the introduction,
I said, "Were you in the military?"
    "Yes m'am, Army, 1964."
    "Thank you for your service."
VietNam era. Many forgot to say thank you. Me included. We were so happy to get out of there. Millions died AFTER we ran out on them. We negotiated the deaths of millions of Koreans going on to this day with the truce in the 1950s. I don't know why we're not trusted or respected. We haven't been on a winning team since 1945. It's not like anyone should be afraid of us. Today they just say "we support you, just not what you do." That must not feel too great, but I suppose it's better than spitting or demonstrating.
