Coffee Spills

What I hear and see and think about at the coffee shops I patronize.
Brisk. Fresh. Well-balanced. Occasional nutty and bittersweet overtones.

Must be uncomfortable

I saw a neatly dressed woman in a sweater, jacket and slacks at the counter ordering a sack of bagels. While waiting for the clerk to fill the order, she leaned over and pulled off one of her loafers. She adjusted the black sock, and replaced her shoe. There was a huge hole in the toe of the sock.

Meeting an old friend

He stopped at my table today and spoke. I'd seen him come in with his two young children, but the face didn't ring a bell. Then when he spoke it all came back. We'd gone out to eat together and some parties with others in the building trades before they were married. My husband was his architect, and he'd known the wife professionally also when she worked for an interior designer. We'd attended their fabulous wedding on Lake Erie maybe 10 years ago. He and the kids, who were dressed in scarlet and gray for the big game, sat next to me close to the fireplace and we caught up. Then he leaned over and said, "I'm a single dad now." I looked at those adorable kids--maybe 6 and 3, and just felt sick.

All I have left is golf

Two guys, one tall and one short, grabbed each others arms with warm hand shakes at Panera's last Friday. Apparently, they were both former athletes, one basketball, the other baseball. Probably not pros, but maybe college. Probably late 50s. They started talking about knee replacements. The shorter of the two had already had two knee replacements, the tall guy said he was afraid it would be soon for him.

The shorter guy said, "All I have left is golf."

You're doing all the talking, Dad!

Watching parents with their kids at the coffee shop reminds me of things I did wrong. This week I've seen the same father/daughter "together time" twice at Panera's. Both are very tall and good looking. I can't hear the conversation, but can see the look on her face. Finally, she did raise her voice, and said, "You're doing all the talking, Dad!" She was right. I could see from the body language and hand waving that he was lecturing her; I'm guessing he had suggested they go out for breakfast and "talk."
